Think back to the mid eighties, or if you're younger than that, think to when you first saw the Constructicons form into Devastator. He was amazing! Huge and super powerful, how would the Autobots ever beat him?
Back then, Transformers were the hottest toys out and the Constructicons came out in a gift set. They were just like the cartoon except, I always felt they were a little small. I would love to say I owned one of these gift sets at the time, it would be many years before I got a set of my own. They were awesome, but still a little small, way smaller than the Autobots cars I was collecting.
Fast forward to 2015 and Hasbro releases it's Combiner Wars Devastator figure and I had to get one. This giant stands 18 inches tall verses about 11 inches for the original. He's very articulate as a robot and still very solid. He feels like a super sized version of the first one, but a little more flexible and a lot easier to keep together.
We can't talk about Devastator without talking about the Constructicons themselves, and for the most part his individual pieces feel like they were pulled right out of the show. Scrapper and Longhaul could have used a little more articulation, but it only affects their robot modes. Hasbro hit the nail on the head with their size in both modes. Compared to the Voyager class cars that we normally see on the shelves, they are just a bit larger, like you would think construction vehicles would be. You can imagine they dwarf their vintage counterparts. They don't seem like they will break as easy either. My buddy let's his two year old play with them, they take a beating and haven't shown any wear or breakage.
I do need to apologize if you feel I have ruined the memory of your beloved G1 Devastator. I assure you I did not mean any harm, I just want to highlight the improvements of these modern versions. As a longtime toy collector I wrestled with vintage versus modern for a long time until I came to my realization that I collect toys for the likeness of the characters, not the specific toys from my age group. It's different for everyone but something to think about.
All in all, some of the best money I've ever spent on a Transformer, or is it 6, I think I saw them referred to as 7 somewhere. However you count him, it's an awesome toy and a great addition to any Transformers collection. Now if I could just find a shelf to fit him on...
